mated equipment, level basin systems, cablegation irrigation

systems, and raising alfalfa on high water table soils with-

o
~ out irrigation.
/-"
C) Additional educational support is being provided in

Grand Valley through a cooperative funding arrangement be-

tween Reclamation, USDA Extension Service, and the Colorado

Cooperative Extension Service (CES).

With a Reclamation

reimbursable agreement, the CBS has hired a full-time exten-

sion agent for the Grand Valley project area to assist

Reclamation and USDA in organizing small irrigation lateral

groups.

Improving smaller off-farm laterals in conjunction

with onfarm systems provides for a more fully coordinated

water management salinity control program. Ultimately, USDA

proposes to fully fund the position.

Monitoring and Evaluation: Minimal monitoring and eva-

luation efforts are underway at this time. With support from

the states, U.s. Geological Survey, USBR, and ARS, the USDA-

SCS monitoring effort includes some 10-15 on farm evaluations,

numerous observation wells and sampling stations in the pro-

ject areas. However, USDA has developed a more comprehensive

long range monitorin~ plan. The proposed plan for Uinta

Basin and Grand Valley includes five major areas: 1) off-

farm and on farm irrigation improvements;

2) wetland/wild-

life; 3) economics; 4) basinwide salinity monitoring; and

5) data analysis and impacts. Detailed procedures and fund-

ing opportunities are now being investigated.

-19-
