USDA onfarm Title II activities include: planning,

implementation, research and education, plus monitoring and

o
~
o
..,.

evaluation.

Planning:

USDA planning activities on irrigation salt

source areas are conducted by the SCS in conjunction with

Reclamation and local salinity control coordinating

committees. Four USDA onfarm reports have been completed
during the reporting period. These include: Lower Gunnison
(CO), Little Colorado River (AZ), Virgin Valley (NV, AZ), and
McElmo Creek (CO). Four additional studies scheduled for
completion in 1983 or 1984 are: l"iancos Valley (CO), Price-
San Rafael Rivers (UT), Colorado River Indian Reservation

(AZ), and Upper Virgin (UT).

Table 5, USDA onfarm Irrigation Salt Source Unit
Studies, gives additional explanations of on farm studies.
Eight irrigated agricultural areas with completed studies
cover 508,000 acres while four studies with 197,000 irrigated

acres are underway. Five irrigation salt source areas with

about 243,000 acres are presently in.a pending or. inactive

status. These USDA on farm studies identify: 1) the extent of

salt source loading;

2) the extent of onfarm irrigation

improvements needed and the potential salt load reductions;

and 3) the costs of recommended implementation programs.

-16-
