, .

. Effect of Limited Irrigation
on Yield of Sugar Beets
Pa ge 5

.

In the moderate stress section, there was a decl ine in both beet and sugar
yield from the unthinned treatments to the 100-110 thinning. The yield
increased with the high 67-75 thinning rate, with the highest tonnage
produced at the 67-75 beets per row stand.

Yields in the heavy stress area ranged from 21.3% to 26.3% less than
the full irrigated sections. Sugar per acre yields followed the same
pattern. Within the heavy stress .treatment, yields tended to increase with
the increase in thinning rate.

In the dryland section, the beets thinned to the 67-75 beets per row rate
exhibited. the best yield. The yield of beets with a 100-110 stand was only
31.4% of its full irrigated counterpart. When thinned to the 67-75 stand,
the yield increased to 36.3% of the fully irrigated counterpart. As would
be expected, statistical eval uation confirmed the effect of water on gross
yield of beets and net yield of sugar. An F value of 31.879 with a significance
of .001 was witnessed for gross yield of beets and 34.611 at the .001 level
for sugar.

fiGURE]

[fFECT or STANO
ON flfLOOF BEETS

FIGURE 4

EFFECT OF 5TAIC) ON
Y!ELDor SUGAA

40,000
".~ 7,000
FULl.
