Four of these sites were in Delta County
and three were in Montrose County. The size of farm ranged from 44
acres to 536 acres. Average field size was 12 acres and average farm
size was 234 acres. Data collected included inflow and outflow for
most irrigations.

X'.'.;
(}~.~

Weather station data collected included solar radiation, temperature
and evapotranspiration.

2. Setting
a) Description of the on-farm and delivery systems

A large number of off-farm delivery systems exist. There are 2 ' I
federal and several private canal systems. Some group systems are I
incorporated; however, many are not. Size of systems varies from 2 1
members to over 100 members. Most of these are currently earthen 'I
ditches but approximately 40 systems are currently being or are
contracted to be concrete lined or replaced with underground pipeline.

Many on-farm systems are also earthen ditches with few or no
improvements. Some farms have concrete ditch lining and underground
pipeline which were installed prior to initiation of LGCU.
Approximately 214 contracts show planned or implemented system
improvements.

b) Description of the monitoring sites,

:~'~s~)

Site 10
NOTE: This cooperator operated a surge valve provided by Colorado
State University Cooperative Extension (CSUCE). sixteen acres were
irrigated with this surge valve and six acres were irrigated using
conventional gated pipe. In 1992 this site evaluated both of these
irrigation systems. In 1993, the conventional system remains site
number 10 and the surge becomes site number 21.
farm acres: 306 (cropland)
location: Delta County, 2 miles West of Delta on Hwy 65
field acres: 6 crop: beans
soils: Billings silty clay loam with 2% slope
irrigation system: Underground pipeline to gated pipe
inflow monitoring equipment: flow meter
outflow monitoring equipment: 12" broadcrested weir, stilling well,
flow sensor with Omnidata 115 data pod.
soil moisture monitoring: Estimated moisture conditions were
determined using the feel and appearance method, readings taken with
an Aquateer Moisture Meter (Aquateer), and a Tile probe.

site 17
NOTE: This cooperator operated a surge valve provided by CSUCE.
