'i, :". ~-'F t>~:~~:,,;r~]$ Dear Sir: To comply with the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Public Law 91-190, we have prepared a preliminary draft of an environmental statement for the collection and diversion ele- ment of the San Juan-Chama. project, Colorado-New lexico. We are enclosing a copy of the draft and a map showing project features for your use in evaluating the statelllent. Although construction of the San Juan-Chama. project was initiated before en!l.ctlllent of the act, it has been determined that this work is a major Federal action which could have a significant effect on the environment. Construction began in 1964 and is now about 75 percent cOlllplete. In accordance with Section 102(2)(c) of the National Environmental Policy Act, and our own departmental regulations, we are requesting your comments on the draft of environmental statement. When your comments and those of other agencies concerned. are received, we will revise and complete the statement. It will then be furnished to the Council on Environmental Quality by the Department of the Interior. Any comments that you make will be included as an enclosUre to the statement when it is forwarded to the Council. In the interest of having a completed statement available for con- sideration by the CounCil, we would appreciate receiving your comments by April 30, 1971. Unless comments are received by that date, we will assume that you have none.
