0
C)
fV
" ~
~
en

Water supply in the high plains and central lowlands area
of the region are generally inadequate to meet developed ueeds
,except in years of abundant supply or where sufficient holdover
storage has been provided. In contrast the quality of water is
best in the mountains and deteriorates in the plains and central
lowlsnds as use of water increases and as salt springs and seeps
contribute to streamflow. Streamflow increases in the eastern
third of the region as annual precipitation increases and exceeds
evapotranspiration. Occasionally, drought conditions prevail in
the eastern'third and water supply is short except where adequate
holdover storage is available. The increased volume of water
available in the eastern third generally improves water quality,
particularly in the White River.

The region is a basic supplier of food and fuel, and its
economy generally has been vibrant and healthy. The general
decline in petroleum and gas production during recent years, and
the trending decline of groundwater supplies in the enormously
developed irrigable areas of the high plans area potentially portray
very serious problems in the economy of the Region. This Assessment
is timely in pointing out these problems so thst solutions, or
actions to alleviate the severity of the problems, can be undertaken
in an orderly fashion.

,

.'

8

;i::01.14t,\_
