The <br />valley lies a few miles to the west <br />01 lhe Continental Divide and oc- <br />cupies the middle porlion of lhe <br />headwaters area of the Snake River. <br />A 159-mile section of the Mis- <br />souri River in Montana from Fort <br />Benton downstream to Robinson <br />Bridge has recently been added to <br />the National Wild and Scenic Rivers <br />System This last remaining major <br />free-flowing portion 01 the Missouri <br />is unlike any other river in the re- <br />gion II passes through the Missouri <br />Breaks. a highly-eroded "badland" <br />type topography_ Unusual eroded <br />sandstone formations resembling <br />castles, parapets. and other ancient <br />structures border the river, which is <br />generally wide and slow-moving. <br />Outcroppings 01 dark intrusive rock <br />thrust upward through this while <br />sandstone, torming what appears <br />to be huge manmade walls of rec. <br />tangular blocks_ <br />Important historic evidence of <br />early Trappers. settlers. and explor. <br />ers, including Lewis and Clark. is <br />found near the river. Occasionally <br />there are sightings of rare species, <br />such as the black.looled lerret and <br />the bald and golden eagles, in the <br />abundant wildlife, The opportunity <br />to view lhe wildlife and unique geo. <br />logic leatures combines with the <br />stow wanderings 01 the river to pro. <br />vide a unique boating experience <br />The study of the Upper Iowa <br />River. in the Northeast corner 01 <br />Iowa. was completed in May 1972. <br />The report recommended State ad- <br />ministration of the river corridor. <br />The Gasconade River in Missouri <br />is one of the eight "instant" rivers <br />added to the National System in <br />October 1968 The U S.
