<br />000370 <br /> <br />Annual water usage from private systems Is estimated at nearly <br />90,000 acre-feet. The manufacture of fertilizer shows the largest <br />annual usage, nearly 27,000 acre-feet, most of which is used for cooling. <br />Sugar processing uses over 19,000 acre-feet annually, part of this from <br />surface supplies which is used to flume and wash the beets. Secondary <br />petroleum recovery and oi I refining are estimated to require about <br />12,000 acre-feet annually. Most of the water requirement for meat <br />processing is supplied by municipal water systems. However, many <br />recent instal lations are supplying their needs through private systems. <br />This amount used from private systems is estimated at over 11,000 <br />acre-feet annually. <br /> <br />Future Requirement <br /> <br />The processing of agricultural products Is expected to remain the <br />major heavy water using industrial activity in the State. It is expected <br />that there wi I I be considerable change in the size and location of plants, <br />especially those processing meats. Increased meat processing facilities <br />will be needed to handle the projected Increase in livestock production. <br />However, many of the 200 sma I ler processors wi I I be forced to terminate <br />their operations because of the sanitation requirements now being Insti- <br />tuted. Meat processing is expected to become concentrated in medium <br />to large plants located near central cities in major livestock feeding <br />areas. Nearly all basins wi II share in the increased operations with <br />the Elkhorn, Middle and Lower Platte, and Big Blue River Basins showing <br />the greatest increase. The trend toward a higher degree of processing <br />by packers wi II add to the water requirement of the meat packing industry. <br /> <br />Sugar processing Is expected to Increase moderately and will be <br />confined to the North Platte Valley. Dairy processing is expected to <br />increase moderately with the increase occurring near the population <br />centers. <br /> <br />The manufacture of ferti lizer wi II likely show the greatest increase <br />In water requirement for the projection period. The new plants are <br />likely to be located In the areas of greatest fertilizer use. <br /> <br />An industrial reserve of 80 gallons per capita per day was included <br />in the projection of municipal water requirements. This Is for pro- <br />jection purposes only and Is not to be considered as a restriction. <br />By 2020 this amounts to 163,000 acre-feet annually. This appears <br />adequate to supply Industrial users likely to connect to municipal <br />systems. <br /> <br />The bigger users, particularly larger meat packing plants, sugar <br />processors and manufacturers of ferti lizers, are likely to develop their <br />own water supplies. The water requirement for Industries to be supplied <br />from private systems Is estimated to be about 144,000 acre-feet annually <br />by 2020. <br /> <br />Tables 7, 8, and 9 show the projected Industrial water reserve in <br />municipal systems and estimated water requirement of private industrial <br /> <br />20 <br />
