co

,.-1

u

be followed by about one'mile of canal, 2,700 feet of tunnel, and a
penstock to a power plant on West Elk Creek near the West Elk Creek

Ranger Station. Water released through the power plant would be

rediverted by a canal for delivery to the Harvey Gap Reservoir.

Geological examination indicated construction of the tunnel would be

difficult and water supply studies showed that power water supply would

fall to as low as 20 second-feet during the fall and winter and that to

secure this amount it would be ,necessary to construct a reservoir on

Meadow Creek and an expensive diversion inlet from Meadow and Mansfield

Creek to the conduit. Cost of the plan was found to be excessive for

the irrigation and power benefits.
C- Enlar,!tement of West Elk Creek Reservoir. A gaging station at

the West Elk Creek Ranger Station showed that stream flow available for

storage was insufficient to warrant the cost involved for a development

under this plan.

D- Enlar,!tement of Existing Ditches from Elk Creek near New Castle

with a Pumpin~ Plant to the Silt Project Lands Near Davis Point. The

canals necessary were found to be too expensive and the pump lift too

great for development under such a plan. Water available in Elk Creek
would be insufficient requiring an expensive canal from the Colorado

River above Glenwood Springs to supplement the supply.

E- Pumpinll: with Direct Connected H'ydro Ptunps Supplied Water From

the Colorado River. This plan was found impracticable due to the high

lift to the project and the small amount of fall in,the Colorado River.

F- Storage on East Rifle Creek ~bove Grass Valley Canal Intake.

The entire watershed of East Rifle Creek was examined and no feasible

reservoir sites were found.
