CO
1:'.
...,

8,000 and 10,000 feet. The surrounding mountains protect the land from

heavy winds and provide relatively cool nights. Weather records collected

at Rifle show erratic precipitation ranging from 6.93 (1936) to 15.55

inches (1921). The average annual precipitation over the period of

record, 1910-1943, is 10.95 inches. Approximately ~4% of the annual

precipitation, or 4.85 inches, occurs during the crop growing season,

May 1 to October 1. The mean annual temperature over the 1910-1943

period averaged410 F. with extremes of 330 below to 1040 above zero.

The average frost free period is 140 days extending from May 12 to
September 29.

Existing Irrigation

Lands of the project are under irrigation facilities of the Farmerts

Irrigation Company, a mutual stock irrigation company, and the Davie

Ditch, a privately owned irrigation canal. The Farmerts Irrigation

Company serves a partial water supply to 5,220 acres of land in the

vacinity of and north of the town of Silt. The Davie Ditch serves a

less ade~late supply of water to 340 acres of land near the town of

Rifle.

Irrigation works of the Farmer's Irrigation Company consist of a

5~ mile canal called Grass Valley, a 4,850 acre-foot off-channel reservoir

called Harvey Gap, and a lateral distribution system. The Grass Valley

Canal heads on East Rifle Creek near the tail water discharge of the

Rifle Falls Power Plant of the Public Service Company. The canal is

used as a feeder for the Harvey Gap Reservoir and as a service canal for

the land irrigated. The present capacity of the canal is approximately

60 second-feet.

,.,
