A. Moulder, District Chief
Water Resources Division
233-3611, Ext. 8621

Water levels in 410 wells tapping the Ogallala Formation in the
High Plains of Colorado will be measured by personnel of the
U.S. Geological Survey during January 1968. The measurements
are being made as a part of the Survey's program to monitor
depletion of the ground-water resources in the rapidly developing
arca. The water-level program is sponsored by the U.S, Geological
Survey, the Colorado Water Conservation Board, and the Colorado
State University. The information will be of interest to
administrators, managers, and users of ground water in the area.

In addition, the study will include making annual estimates of
ground-water ~ithdrawals, and recording and locating new wells,
This program, initiated in 1954, will continue indefinitely and
will be intensified as development of the resource continues. The
data collected as part of this continuing study will be summarized
on maps and in tables and will show: (1) the location of large
capacity wells, (2) the depth to water, (3) the annual withdrawal
of ground wilter, and (4) the change in storage as reflected by
ch~mges' in ground-water levels.

At the same time, water levels will be measured in wells in the
Ogallala Formation in western Kansas by Survey parties headquartered
in Colby, Kansas. The field parties will be supervised by T. J.
Hajor in Colorado and Edward D. Jenkins in Kansas. Other Survey
participants in Colorado are: H. J. McIntyre, J. F. James,
V. M. Burtis, and T. Kostick, J. A. Brookman from Colorado State
University will supplement their efforts.

The cooperation of l.:.mJownL'rs and irrigators in the High Plains
is solicited and appreciated.

117E
