Flooded Bottoms

Sampling of the 8 sites ~~ conducted according to Table I.

Table 1. Fish evaluation within flooded bottomlands.

Pre-Flood Flooding (Weekly) Recession (Weekly) Post-Flood
(one time) (monthly)
Terraces NA inflows - 2-3 larval drift inflows - 2-3 larval drift NA
nets, 1-2 trap and 1-2 nets, 1-2 trap and 1-2
trammel nets, 5 light traps trammel nets, 5 light traps
(in still water encircling (in still water encircling
inflows) inflows)
in situ - 1-2 trap and 1-2 in situ - 1-2 trap and 1-2
trammel nets trammel nets
Depressions in situ- inflows - 2-3 larval drift inflows - 2-3 larval drift in situ - 3
with water trap and nets, 1-2 trap and 1-2 nets, 1-2 trap and 1-2 trap and 2
trammel trammel nets, 5 light traps trammel nets, 5 light traps trammel
netting (in still water encircling (in still water encircling nets, 5
inflows) inflows) light traps
in situ - 1-2 trap and 1-2 in situ - 1-2 trap and 1-2
trammel nets trammel nets

Gear Dimensions - Fyke nets are 6 nun mesh, with a single 0.91 m x 15.2 m lead, 0.91 m x 1.82 m
rectangular frame, 5 hoops and 3 funnels. Trammel nets are 1.22 m wide with three 7.6 m panels of
different walling and mesh sizes. The end panels are 15.2 em walling x 1.3 em mesh and 20.3 em walling
x 2.5 em mesh. The center panel is 17.8 em walling x 1.9 em mesh. Light traps with 4 mm openings will
be used during the I st half of the summer and traps with 6 mm openings will be used during the second
half. Fyke nets and light traps will set in the afternoon and retrieved early the following morning (light
traps before sunrise followed by fyke nets). Trammel nets will set in the morning for I to 2 hours after
retrieval of light traps and fyke nets. Drift nets will be set for 2 hours as other sampling activities are
occurring. Fyke nets and trammel nets will usually be set perpendicular to the shore in open water.

All fish caught in light traps (will likely include drift nets samples as well) will be preserved in alcohol and
sent to the Larval Fish Lab, Colorado State University for identification. Up to 20 total lengths will be
recorded for each species caught. When possible, fish caught in fyke nets will be separated and counted by
species. However, when profuse quantities of small fish (I.e., between 35 and 80 mm) are caught in fyke
nets, time and personnel constraints dealing with counting these fish will be impractical. When this occurs,
large fish (> 80 mm) will be removed from the net and individual weights and total lengths recorded.
Catch estimates for the number of small fish caught in these hauls will be obtained by enumerating a sub-
sample and extrapolating the percent composition of the sub-sample to the haul. Individual weights and
total lengths will be recorded for all fish caught in trammel nets. Some individuals of nonnative species
caught in trammel nets will be eviscerated for stomach contents analysis.

6
