AND COSTS <br /> <br />The potential Carboijdale Cartal would head on a natural channel about <br />one mile below the outlet of Pissouri Heights Reservoir and would extend <br />southwest 12.6 miles, crossing Roaring Fork River by siphon and providing <br />water to lands in the Carbondale area. The canal would also intercept <br />surplus flows of Prince Creek. The Sopris Canal would branch from the <br />Carbondale Canal at the outlet of the Roaring Fork siphon and would con- <br />vey water 8.3 miles southwest to West Sopris Creek to provide additional <br />irrigation water to lands in the Sopris area. <br /> <br />Some lands located above project works would receive project water <br />by exchange. <br /> <br />Existing irrigation systems are generally adequate to convey supple- <br />mental project water to lands presently irrigated, but these systems would <br />be enlarged as necessary. Some new laterals would be constructed to con- <br />vey water to the additional lands that would be irrigated. Land drains <br />would alSO be provided as needed. <br /> <br />It is anticipated that a water conservancy district would be organ- <br />ized under Colorado law as a contracting and administrative agency for the <br />Basalt project. <br /> <br />Construction Considerations <br /> <br />A period of about four years is estimated to be required for the con- <br />struction of the features of the Basalt project. This period is exclusive <br />of the time required for the construction of the Ruedi Dam and Reservoir. <br />The two construction programs cotud be carried out simultaneously, however. <br />Reasonably good access is afforded to all features of the project Over <br />existing transportation routes. <br /> <br />Pro,ject Features <br /> <br />Missouri Heights Dam and Reservoir enlargement <br /> <br />~~e Missouri Heights Dam and Reservoir enlargement would consist of <br />raising the existing 23-foot-high dam approximately 44 feet to a total of <br />67 feet above streambed and increasing its crest length from about 1,600 <br />feet to about 3,400 feet. The reservoir capacity would be increased from <br />the present 2,800 acre-feet to 21.500 acre-feet, an increase of 18,700 <br />acre-feet. <br /> <br />The dam would be a rolled earthfill structure \,ith a layer of riprap <br />on the upstream face and a section of gravel and rockf'ill on the downstream <br />face. The outlet works would consist of a reinforced concrete conduit <br />laid on undisturbed earth under the dam embankment. ~'o prevent seepage <br /> <br />13 <br />
