archaeological and historical importance within the study area. There are

no known historical or archaeological sites that will be affected by salin-

ity control work. It is recognized, however, that the area has been occu-

pied at various times in the past and there is a good possibility that

artifacts may be discovered when working in previously undisturbed soils.

If cultural resources are discovered during construction the State

Historic Preservation Officer has agreed that to expedite both excavation

and evaluation of any finds, construction should be stopped for a maximum of

48 hours to provide opportunity for a qualified archaeologist to examine the

site, to advise the landowner as to potential eligibility for the National

List of Historic Places, and to decide upon potential mitigative or recovery

measures. If sites are found that are eligible for the National Register of

Historic Places the State Historic Preservation Officer, Interagency Archae-

ological Services and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation will be

advised and given a reasonable opportunity to comment on the proposed acti-

vities or recovery plan in accordance with Soil Conservation Service proce-

dures for protecting archaeological and historic properties encountered in

SCS assisted programs (7 CFR 656, July 18, 1971, as amended July 23, 1978).

Climate

The mean annual temperature at Delta is 510F and ranges from a July

mean of 940F to a January mean of 140F. The mean annual temperature for all

Lower Gunnison stations is 49.60F. The average annual precipitation at

Delta is 8 inches and 9 inches at Montrose. About one half is in the form

of winter snow. The average length of the growing season is 146 days near

Delta with elevation of 4,960 msl and 152 days at Montrose, elevation 5,800.

The estimated length of growing season at Crawford and other locations at

higher elevations is about 105 days. The area below about 6,200 feet

elevation is characterized by low precipitation, low humidity, abundant

sunshine, and a wide range in annual and daily temperatures.

001222

III-4
