.

.

001870

soils. The trenches are aligned in random patterll, but it was noted that

in charcos having ,a north-south alignment, which is about normal to the

prevailing wind direction and which ~lso should give the least solar radi-

ation, an,d having the spoil bank on the windward side, the water level on

the average was from 1 to 2. feet higher than in.other ponds. It was re-

ported that an ponds had been fuU a,bout 3 months earlier during the

spring snowmelt. Abo, there appeared to be little difference inthe

seepage in any of the ponds as the rate .of recessil)p. in all ponds not

aligned normal to the prevailing wind was aboat equivalent to the

measured pan evaporation in the vicinity. Thus, the reduced evapo;r-

ation appeared to be directly at,tributable to reduc~ solar radiation

and to partial insulation from the wind currents resulting from the

position of the spoil bcyk.
Suppression o{ evaporation by the applicatidn of monomolecular'

films has been the object of consideraple research in recent years.

Procedures for applying the film and some of the results obtained in

reducing evaporation have been described in the literature and will

be mentioned only briefly.

The mos~ widely used compound is a~cetyl alcohol, hexadecanol,

a wax.like sO.lid, insoluble in water, but forming a film on the water

surface one molecule in thickness when disp.ensed in the water.

Several other related compounds have been tested, the most c.ommon

49
