The higher quality fishing streams include most of the Encampment A iver and its North and West
FQrks.

Brown, brook, and rainbow trout, all introduced by man, are common. The cutthroat trout, native to the
western United States, is not found in the Encampment Unit. Fall-spawning brown and brook trout
populations are generally self-sustaining, but the spring-spawning rainbow does not do as well. Some of the
smaller streams are overpopulated with brook trout, resulting in slow growth and stunting.

Below 8,000 feet elevation brown trout tend to be the dominant species in the larger streams. Rainbows are
found in Hog Park Reservoir and downstream.

The streams are clear, and have favorable proportions of pools and riffles. This provides a good food supply,
and deep Quiet resting areas for fish. During spring and early summer the water is high, swift, and cloudy,
and stream fish ing is not good during that period.

II

~
.~
~
,
~
~
~
~
~
