.VlOTHER CITY OF

THE DAKOTAS"

HISTORY

Y .nklon h.d iI, beginning .. a cily in 1858.1859. when
the firsf white spttlement was made, but the site dlready had
been a historical spot for more than 50 yeats. It was here
near the confluence of the James and Missouri rivers, .ihat
Lewis and Cldrk spent the winter of 1804, and it wa!. here
that a S;OU)( Indian W.lS wrapped in an American flag by
Cilpt. Meriwether Lewis. This child later bC'~am~ Chief Struck.
by-thc-Rec, (1nd played an important part in deve:oping \~rjenclly
relations behvc.en t~1e whites .:l n d t~e Siou;c: many yeals
afterward.

Historically si't:'aking, Yankton will probably always he
called the "/\Jlotner City" to the territory that originaljy com-
prised Dakota Territory. The reason for this. appeaation is ~hal
it was the ori9:n~r capital of that vast empire which hc1S been
divided up ~o ',('come, wholly or in part, Idaho, Montana,
Wyoming, North Dakota, Nebras~(a, and South Dakota. It
was the se,lt of such government as there was for this great
expanse of territory in which several of the sovereign !.tatcc;,
of Europe could be set down with still room for more_

Yankton's history can roughly be divided into a numbel
of phases or periods. The years from 1858-59, when 'iirst
white iettlt:'ment bp.gan to the establishment of the territorial
government here in 1861-62, was marked by two big accom.
plishments, the signing of treaty with the !ndians and ~'hej,
removal, and the pass~qe of the act creating the territory by
thE' CongrA~s.

The decade of the 1880's was one of unusuill activity ~lnd
great promise for Yankton. Railway efforts culminated in \.hc
comp;(:tior. of the first line in~o Oakotil in 1872-73, and Yankton
for a time enjoyed the rich fruits that Came from being ~he
rail-hearL The stf!<tmboating industry a~so WilS at its lenith
during that colorful period, and it meant added business clnd
Populdtion for Yankton, which was an important port of t,lll
and of re-shipment of 900ds consigned up the river. Emigra.
tion looked up with the coming of German-Americans to add
an industrious and stable element to the population.
