00234,

Boulder cops want onlce
free from threat of floods

By Renate Robey
~PoslSIaI1Writer
BOULDER - ^ major flood
could wash away police headquar.
ters and seriously jeopardize res-
cue efforts. police officials fear.
As a result, they want to move.
"In the event of a flood. we
would be one of the primary agen-
cies responding to the flood - and
we would be right in the middle of
it... police spokesman David
Grimm said.
Three years ago. Boulder offi.
cials received Dew maps from the
federal government that placed the
12-)-ear..old Criminal Justice Cen-
ter at 6th and Canyon in a high
flood-hazard area.
"We knew as soon as we saw the
maps that we were in jeopardy,"
Grimm said.
It would be difficult to rescue
anyone when "all your rolling
equipment is in an underground
parking lot that is probably going
to be flooded:' Grimm said.
Sheriff's officials also have con-
sidered moving out of the center or
relocating to the building's second
Ooor.
The sheriffs department recent-
ly placed $875,000 worth of flood
walls around the building. "But
even if the nood walls hold, the
building would be isolated in the
event of a serious nood," AssiStant
SheriH Dave Voorhis acknowl-

Piper says maps were outdated.

edged,
The police department Is consid-
ering several buildings, including
the former home of Mountain Bell
at 1805 33rd 5l.
The county Is negotiating with
the city to use the vacated policelspace for county courtroom space.
City manager Jim Piper said the
municipal building, library and a
number of other buildings also are
located in high nood-hazard areas.
"They were built before there was
any fioodplain mapping done," he
said.

D~ev- p~
3 - 2-0 - f? -r
