COLORADO RIVER RECOVER V PROGRAM
FV-98 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT # CAP 9

I. Project Title: Operation and Maintenance of Vampa River Gages

II.

Principal Investigator:

George Smith
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Division of Water Resources
P.O. Box 25486 DFC, Denver, CO
(303) 236-5322. ext. 235
(303) 236-4224
George _ Smith@fws.gov

III, Project Summary:

The new USGS gages (installed in 1 997) are located above and below the confluence
of the Uttle Snake River on the Vampa River. The upper gage will be used to identify
gains and losses between the Maybell gage and Deerlodge Park to help biologists
understand what is happening to flows in this reach of river. The lower gage, which
replaces the old Deerlodge Park gage at a new location. is more accurate and is being
used to match Green and Vampa River peaks and to help set a target to maintain
nursery habitats in the Ouray reach of the Green River. Both gages were utilized to
quantify flow regimes for the Vampa River Low Flow Study.

.

IV. Study Schedule: Initial year 1998. The gage installed below the confluence of the Uttle
Snake River is ongoing. The gage located above the Uttle Snake is scheduled to operate
a minimum of three years.

V. Relation to RIPRAP:

Green River Action Plan Vampa and Uttle Snake Rivers
I.A.2 Long Term Monitoring
I.A.4.a(l)(b) Monitor Steamboat Lake Releases
I.B.1 Identify year-round flows needed for recovery

VI. Accomplishments:

The USGS operates and maintains the gage as specified in their cooperative agreement
with the Colorado Division of Wildlife. USGS produces daily flow and temperature
records. which will be published in the annual water resource paper for Colorado,
Interim data is available by FAX from the Grand Junction USGS office, 303/245-5257.
Near real-time data from the gage can also be found on the Internet @httpllnwis-
colo.cr .usgs.gov.

VII. Recommendations: Continue operating the upper gage through 2001.

VIII. Project Status: Ongoing and on track. The data from the upper gage will be evaluated
in 2001 to detennine if the record is sufficient to correlate inflow between Maybell and
Deerlodge Park.

1
