SUMMARY OF IMPACTS FOR ALTERNATIVES CONSIDERED IN DETAIL

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

3,1'"1....
" . ......l

The Mount of the Holy Cross area was designated as wilderness by an
act of Congress in 1980. This enabling legislation exempted
construction and operation of the Homestake Phase II project from
Wilderness status. The area contains outstanding scenery and natural
resources with few existing visual intrusions.
Transportation systems in the study area include U. S. Highway
24, the only paved highway and major access route to Interstate 70 on
the north or the City of Leadville to the south, and a network of
gravel and unimproved dirt roads. The Denver and Rio Grande
Western Railroad traverses the study area from northwest to southeast,
paralleling Eagle River and U.S. 24 over Tennessee Pass. No
archaeological or historical sites eligible for nomination to the National
Register of Historical Places have been identified in the project area.
Most of the study area is in a pristine undeveloped state with very low
ambient noise levels,

The following tables summarize the impacts and issues associated
with Alternatives 1 through 6. Table 2-4 summarizes the net impacts
expected after the mitigation measures discussed in the preceding
section have been implemented.

15

I
I
I
I
I
I
