Particle size will be determined by sieving particles through a square hole in an
aluminum plate, cut to represent an equivalent screen size from 1 em through 10 em at I em
increments, thcn 2 em increments through 20 em. Particles larger than 20 cm are recorded as
greater than 20 cm. Interstitial material smaller than 1 cm is not recorded.

Depth of open interstitial space (depth to embeddedness) will be measured on a 5 or IO-ft
grid over the extend of the spawning bar. Measurement will be made by working a hand between
rocks until the fingers touch embedded sand. The depth of penetration below the average top of
cobble immediately adjacent to the sample point will be measured and recorded as the depth of
open interstitial space.

10

Draft Long Term Monitoring Plan - SJRIP Biology Committee
