Ben Nighthorse Campbell
will host chairman of the House Interior Subcommittee on National
Parks and Public Lands, Bruce Vento (D-Minn.), for an
informational hearing in Montrose Sunday, Aug. 12, I to 3 p.m.

"Many people have worked for years to iron out the conflicts
involved in redesignating the Black Canyon," Campbell said. "We
all appreciate Chairman Vento's willingness to come to Western
Colorado, to hear us out and to see for himself the magnificent
canyon that we think deserves national park status."

Community leaders and members of Campbell's Black canyon
Advisory Committee will brief Chairman Vento on their concerns
and their progress in resolving issues revolving around water,
tourism and recreation, land use and management and facilities.
The Advisory Committee consists of representatives of local
governments, environmental groups, groups promoting recreation
and tourism and water and agricultural interests.

"This is an informal, informational hearing, and we won't
have time to take testimony from the public at large," Campbell
said. "But everyone is welcome to come listen, and my office is
always open to comments and suggestions as we continue this
process." He added that members of the advisory team are also
accessible to the people they represent.

Congressman Campbell'S bill, which he introduced late last
week only hours before congress recessed for the month of August,
designates the Black Canyon National Monument as a national park;
establishes a National Conservation Area for surrounding Bureau
of Land Management lands and establishes the Gunnison River
through the canyon and the gorge as a "wild and scenic" river.

-- more --
