Page Three

Major contamination by toxic chemicals exists under very limited areas such as

the Lowry Landfill and Rocky Mountain Arsenal.

Techniques exist for

containing the expansion of these contaminated areas. No acute problems are

now known. The possibilities of future toxic substance pollution of this

groundwater resource is of such serious consequence that the risks of such

occurrence should be carefully controlled.

B. Amount Available

It is estimated that the entire 6,600 square mile Denver Basin contains

between 175-250 million acre feet (AF) of theoretically recoverable

ground....ater. This appears to be a widely accepted estimate, although the

range of uncertainty is significant. A 100 square mile area under Denver is

estimated to contain between 3.6 to 4.1 million acre feet.

In order to put these estimates into perspective, 250 million AF would

theoretically provide over 1 million persons with over two hundred gallons per

day for over 1,000 years. The amount that is practicably recovered may be

much less because the bedrock ground....ater in the aquifer is spread over a

broad area; much of it is at great depth and is at considerable distance from

the municipal use market.
