>

the well was plugged, there was a substantial (about 20 percent) decrease

,
I ! in sodium and a slight (about 6 percent) decrease in bicarbonate as com-

pared to the August 5 sample.

Because of the fluctuating flows and the irriBated land between the

.'

well and the mouth of Piceance Creek and the lack of flow measurements

for FllPCA, samples, Table 8 does not sho\'I as much improvement in the water
,
quality Js miGht be expected from plugging the "ell. However, Table 9,

the rnineJal concentration of the samples adjusted to the concentration of

the August 5 sample, indicates that aftcr the wcll was plugged, the pro-
portirns of the minerals changed as follows.
Ca I-'.g Na K HC~ Cl 804
Before plugging well 40 85 55l 4.3 l,340 69 435
After plugging well 70 119 464 6.l ' l,220 59 573
Percent change +75 +40 -l6 +42 -lO _111 +32

The analysis indicates that the water quality has improved after the

yell was plugged as the ratio of sodium, bicarbonate, and chloride to the

total mineral has decreased. FUrther quality improvement should occur as

the return flows drain from the irrigated land dOl'lnstream of the well.

CONCillSIONS

Plugging the Meeker and Piceance Creek wells decreased the arUlual

flow of the White River by about 2,380 acre-fect. It is the opinion of

"

the'Regional Geologist, hO\',ever, that the flow from the plugged wells

will return through natural spril1g~er thE;' rechE,ree area \'Iith an im-

proved ~uality but no decrease in the annual discharge of the ~~ite

2013

River. illlether or not this occurs cannot be detel~ined as the discharge

of the wells was less than a half percent of the average Brillual discharse

of the ,nli te Hi vel'.

lO
