Elbert Forebay

to be built as part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project will be loca-

ted approximately 13 miles south of Leadville, Colorado, in Lake

County. The proposed active conservation pool at Twin Lakes will

extend 5 miles above the dam along Lake Creek and will inundate

3,137 acres of land located in 8 sections. The enlarged reservoir

will inundate about 692 acres of land above the present conserva-

tion pool capacity. Mt. Elbert Forebay is situated on a hill about

1 miles north of Twin Lakes Reservoir and will inundate approximately

279 acres of land. Access is available via U. S. Highway No. 24

.

and from Colorado State Highway No. 82. Mt. Elbert, Colorado's

highest peak (elevation 14,431 feet), rises immediately to the

northwest (Figure 2).

1. Twin Lakes Dam

As now planned, Twin Lakes Dam will be a zoned, rolled earth-

fill structure with a height above streambed of 60 feet. The

new dam axis will be located approximately 2,500 feet down-

stream from the existing dam (Figure 3). It will have a crest

width of 30 feet and a length of 3,200 feet at crest elevation

9,217.0. A cutoff trench, backfilled with impervious material,

will extend under the dam from abutment to 'abutment. The

interior core of Zone 1 impervious material will be topped on

.

A-5
