WATER <br />CONSERVATION BOARD <br /> <br />July 22, 1965 <br />IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> <br />"Search for the best regional plan to augment the supply of <br /> <br />'<l3ter in the Pacific Southwest and to seek that plan's early implementation," <br /> <br />was described today as a major objective of the Colorado River Board of <br /> <br />California in its annual report to Gov. Edmund Brown, the first such report <br /> <br />made. <br /> <br />Raymond R. Rummonds of Coachella, State Colorado River Commissioner <br /> <br />and chairman of the Board, also emphasized the negessity for protecting <br /> <br />existing uses of Colorado River water, as well as for providing benefits to <br /> <br />areas of surplus water from which transfers to the arid Southwest might be <br /> <br />made. <br /> <br />The report reviews the history of the Board and its many <br /> <br />accomplishments since it was formed in 1937. <br /> <br />It also contains a review 6fsix suggestions already m~de for <br /> <br />projects by which water surplus in areas outside the basin of the Colorado <br /> <br />River might be moved to supplement that overcommitted stream. <br /> <br />Legislation now pending in Congress which concerns development <br /> <br /> <br />of the Lower Basin also provides for a study by Secretary bf the Interior <br /> <br />Stewa:=t Udall t.o evaluate these and other proposals for the purpose of <br /> <br />pern.i.tting Congress to select the most feasible one. <br /> <br />W3ter shortage is forecast for major parts of Arizona, California, <br /> <br />Color3do, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, all of which growing States <br /> <br />depend in varying degree upon the river which now is the only major stream <br /> <br />in the nation that is completely utilized, discharging no fresh water to <br /> <br />the sea. <br /> <br />-hbr- <br />
