Most of the municipal and
industrial water is planned
for use in Montrose, OIathe.
Delta and surrounding rural
areas under the recently con"
structed piped system of the
Tri-County Water Conser-
vancy District.
The remaining supply
would be available for use
anywhere in the Tri-County
District, the only restriction
being that not more than 5,100
acre-feet of the supply could
be diverted above the Mon-
trose <Ind Delta Canal in
order that adequate fishery
flows woo\d be available in
the river between the reser-
voir and the cana\.
Because of the
questionable quality of Un-
compahgre River water for
municipal use, agreements
have been signed between
Tri-County and the Uncom-
pahgre Valley Water Users
Assn. to permit the use of
Gunnison Riverwater forthis
""'.
Under terms of these
agreements. water released
to the river from Ridgway
Reservoir in the amount
- needed for downstream
municipal use, will be
diverted lor irrigation use by
the association,
In exchange for tbis water,
the municipal water users
will obtain at least part of
their supplies from South
Canal, below the outlet of
Gunnison Tunnel.
Regardless of the source of
supply, the conservancy dis-
trict and ,mu.nicjp8~ .and in-
measured by the equivalent
cost 01 obtaining water from
the most likely single-
purpose alternative means of
development.
This alternative would be
the purchase of 30,900 acre-
feet of water from Blue
Mesa Reservoir on the Gun-
nison River with an
allowance of 10' percent for
carriage system loSSes and
reservoir evaporation, to
satisfy the project need of28,-
100 acre-feet.
This water would be
delivered to \he Uncom-
pahgre River Basin through
the existing Gunnison Tunnel
and the South Canal of the Un-
compahgre Valley Water
Users Association,
Diversions would be made
through the tunnel in April
and October when the full
tunnel capacity was not re-
quired by the association for
irrigation supplies.
The water would be
regulated in a 25,OOOacre.foot
tenninal storage reservoir
that would be constrUcted on
Dry Cedar Creek below the
South Canal.
A pipeline would be coo..
structed to convey releases
