OTHER NEEDS

.

The municipal and industrial wat,r supply for Holly is derived

from wells and is generally of good q~ality and in adequate supply for,

future needs. Existing surface flowsiof the Arkansas River are not

acceptable for municipal use due to p~rmanent hardness.

.

Irrigation water in the Holly ar~a is d~rived from the surface

waters of the Arkansas River and larg~ capacity wells,in the valley

alluvium. Due to the short and undep~ndable supply of surface irriga-

tion water the use of wells has inten~ified to the point where ground~
,

water mining is being experienced and.could ultimately cause severe

problems. A portion of the irrigation water is supplied to the study

area via the Buffalo Canal, which cro$ses Wild Horse Creek north of

Holly. Another canal, Holly Ditch, formerly used for irrigation water

, ,
supply is abandoned and blocked at Wild Horse Creek.

Recreation opportunities in the immediate area of Holly are limited

due to extensive agriculture developm~nts and the lack of good quality

na~ural water areas and lakes with inviolate recreation pools.

Dense growth of phreatophytas consisting of cottonwoods, willows,

snd salt cedar infests the Arkansas River valley at Holly. Dua to the

dense foilage of the salt cedar, it i$one of the highest users of

groundwater. Floodwaters are 'the primary means of 'spreading the salt

cedar.

IMPROVEMENTS DESIRED

In a public coordination meeting'held at Holly during the formula-

tion studies conducted for the raview, survey on the Arkansas River

from John Martin Dam to Great Bend, K~nsas, local interests expressed

.

10
