KANSAS 66612

To those who have requested Technical Report Number 5:

This report is another in the continuing series of technical reports pre-
pared as a part of the cooperative analytical program of the Kansas Water
Resources Board and the Surface Water Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey.
It is the fifth in a series of studies of Kansas streamflow characteristics.

Curves defining the storage requirements to control high flows have been
developed from streamflow records at 101 gaging stations in Kansas and
adjoining areas. Storage requirements and outflow rates are defined for
selected values of storage deficiency ranging from Z to 50 percent chance
of storage being insufficient in anyone year to store the floods without
uncontrolled releases. In addition to defining storage requirements to
control high flows at existing gaging stations, the report develops methods
for evaluating storage requirements for all streams of the state whether
gaged or ungaged having drainage areas of more than 150 squar~ miles.
This phase of the study is limited to the Z and 4 percent chance curves,
which are considered to have the greatest application to storage problems.

A reservoir cannot reduce the total volume of flood runoff, but with
adequate capacity it can reduce or prevent flooding. This report is to
define flood storage requirements throughout Kansas as an aid to govern-
mental agencies and design engineers who are charged with the responsi-
bility for finding the best solution to reducing flood damage.

\
.

I
