OOJL/5

.

2.6 BASE STATION SOFTWARE

2.6.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Sierra/Misco proposes to supply the widely--used Enhanced ALERT software.
Enhanced ALERT is used in locations around the world including National
Weather Service Offices in San Juan. PRo Fort Wayne. IN, Kansas City, MO,
Los Angeles, CA. Redwood City. CA, Reno, NV. Fresno, CA. Boise. 10, and
Salt Lake City, UT. Enhanced ALERT has been proven to be reliable and easy
to usee Enhanced ALERT is used in Houston, TX in a flood warning system
that was selected as "ONE OF TEN OUTSTANDING ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENTS IN
THE U.S.' in 1985 by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Enhanced ALERT is a complete data acquisition. data communication data
base management, data display, and data analysis system. Data summaries,
graphical plots display definition. data base maintenance system backup,
system archiving.. and network message passing are some of the important
capabilities of Enhanced ALERT,

Users can easily add programs to operate with Enhanced ALERT. Enhanced
ALERT is written in a highly modular form, Each function or activity is
normally a separate independent program module. A programmable menu system
is provided that brings all the independent programs together in one
interface. User's can easily customize the menu to meet their own needs by
configuring Enhanced ALERT programs with selected defaults or by adding
programs of their own to the menu system.

. The Enhanced ALERT Software System proposed for pikes Peak Regional System
has the capability for 700 sensors with enough on..line storage for over
three years of Pikes Peak Region Rainfall.

DATA COLLECTION AND DATA BASE OPERATION' Incoming data from Sierra/Misco
environmental sensors are first detected by the Model 5051R/D Weather Data
Receiver/Decoder. The incoming radio signal is transformed from radio
analog form to a digital format and forwarded to the base station computer
through a standard RS 232C serial co~nunication port. After passing
several quality control checks imposed by Enhanced ALERT the data are then
formatted and filed on a hard disk. Once data filing is complete. the
information is immediately available for display or further analysis.

To retrieve any information on file. simple keystroke commands from the
system are all that is required, If you need help just ask the on. line
assistance file in the software package and more detailed instructions will
appear on the video display.

DATA ~mNAGEMENT FEATURES The base station's extensive data management
capabilities allow all record keeping for a data network to be performed
centrally rather than at each remote gaging site, Overall system costs are
kept low by eliminating the need for mechanical recording devices such as
paper punch tape or plotting charts at the remote sites along with their
frequent maintenance requirements.

.

Incoming data are automatically formatted and filed, Tedious manual data
reduction and entry is no longer necessary.
