.-, t -. ~"
.....'2,:

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

43

I
I.

city of new steel plate, the salvaging of the 36-inch steel pipe line
extending from Morris Dam to the City of Pasadena, which had
not been used by the city since the District took over Morris reser-
voir, was thoroughly investigated. A section of pipe line 1,800
feet long was removed by the City of Pasadena in order to examine
the condition of the pipe and coating, and to determine the cost of
removal and reconditioning. As a result of this investigation it
was estimated that approximately 58,000 feet of the pipe could be
recovered and used in the Orange County feeder extension. At
the close of the fiscal year 1941-42, an application to the War Pro-
duction Board in Washington, D. C. was being prepared for a
project approval and preference rating on the proposed pipe line.

I
,

Softening plnnt "'/ld 1V"8te ,"ate/" line
The principal contract and most of the subcontracts and supple-
mental contracts covering the construction and equipment of the
water softening plant were completed prior to June 30, 1941. The
landscaping of the grounds was completed by the Armstrong Nurs-
eries early in July. The waste water line, which because of the
heavy rains of the previous winter and consequent flood conditions
at the San Jose Creek cro"ing had been fitted in April 1941 with
a temporary steel by-pass line across the creek, finally was com-
pleted on September 22, 1941.
In October 1941 a battery of water heaters was installed in the
softening plant for experimental use in determining the relative
corrosivity of hot and cold water, unsoftened water, and softened
water with various methods and degrees of softening.
The construction cost of the softening and filtration plant on
June 30, 1942 was $2,989,145.42 and of the wllste water disposal
line $446,568.79. The waste water line consisted of 116,283 feet
of 28, 25, 22, and 20-inch inside diameter centrifugally-cast con-
crete pipe in 8-foot lengths. The cost per foot, including the cross-
ings of San Jose Creek and San Gabriel River, in both of which
the jine was incased in concrete, was $3.84.

Construction cost, tuunels fOul})ipe l-ines
The construction costs to June 30, 1942 of the tunnels and pipe
lines of the distribution system, together with other pertinent data,
are given in tables 12 to 15. For convenience of comparison, the
pipe lines are segregated into large, medium, and small diameters,
and into types of pipe.
