At
the beginning of this fiscal year, construction had been completed
to the point that softened, filtered Colorado River water was being
delivered on a 60.day free basis to Pasadena from the upper
feeder; to Burbank, Beverly Hills, and Santa MOnica from the
Santa Monica feeder; and to Ascot Reservoir of the Los Angeles
city water system, to Compton, and after July 7, 1941 to Torrance,
from the Palos Verdes feeder and its systcm of laterals. Water
was llvailable to but not taken by Glendale and Long Beach during
the free period. Before the end of July 1941. the Orange County
feeder was completed and delivery of softened, filtered Colorado
River water on a 60-day free basis was begun to the cities of Ful-
lerton, Anaheim, and Santa Ana.

l
I

Cou",tructio1/.
The distribution system construction operations performed dur-
ing the early part of the fiscal year to complete the initial develop-
ment are describcd in the following paragraphs,

01"((>I[/e Comity feeder, Schedllle, 8.~P, S!iP, ami S6P
All construction work, except testing and clean-up, on the upper
section of the Orange County feeder, Schedule 34P, was completed
at the close of the previous fiscal year. Testing WllS finished on
July 14 and final clean-up two weeks later. On the next two sec-
tions of the feeder, Schedules 35P and 36P, the last 600 feet of
pipe were laid, the few remaining structures were completed, the
line was tested and backfilled, and clean-up was finished on July
28, 1941. Leakage on all schedules was 2 to 5 per cent of the
allowable 50 gallons per inch of diameter per mile of pipe per day.
Construction of all three schedules aggregating 99,843 feet of pipe
line was awarded as a single contract to the American Concrete
and Steel Pipc Company which in turn subcontracted the pipe line
in Schedule 34P to the United Concrete Pipe Corporation. The
costs and other data for the three schedules are given in tahle 13,
page 46.

[ 37 ]
