"" ~) <br /> <br />32 <br /> <br />METKOPOLITA;>< WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />TelephoHe system <br />Routine maintenance of telephone lines, equipment, and patrol <br />roads was carried on throughout the year. Brush fires on Ma.v 19, <br />1942 damaged the telephone line at two locations: two miles east <br />of Banning, where 28 poles were burned; and one mile east of <br />Cabazon, where six }Jole~ were burned. Service was restored <br />within 24 hours by running temporary lines and the damaged <br />poles were later replaced. <br />In June 1942, a contract was entered into with the Southern <br />California Telephone Company covering the use by the company <br />of twa District telephone circuits between Whitewater and Iron <br />1\-lountain for carrier current communication, rental of ~pace for <br />equipment in Hayfield and Iron Mountain plants, and ,'ental of <br />pin space on the District line between Iron Mountain and Rice. <br />These facilities are needed to provide telephone service for U. S. <br />Army camps in the desert training area. Installation of equipment <br />at Hayfield and Iron Mountain and stringing of four wires on <br />District poles from Iron Mountain to Rice were completed at the <br />end of the fiscal >'ear by the telephone company. <br />The net cost of the construction and permanent telephone sys- <br />tems to ,Iune 80, 1942 was $R45,519.73. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />T"(lIl::}1H-iss.inu 1i1les <br />The 230,OOO:volt transmission lines from Boulder to the pump- <br />inz plants we'-e patrolled and maintained throughout the year <br />'''ithout unusual incident. Six patrolmen covered the transmis- <br />sion and telephone lines from Boulder to Gene and Hayfield. Two <br />patrolmen covered the telephone Jines from Hayfield to La Verne. <br />There were 23 power outages during the year caused by electrical <br />storms. none of which caused any material damage. Service was <br />immediately restored following each outage. There were 5 pre- <br />arranged outages on the transmission system dllring the year of <br />from 2 hours to 20 hours each. Four of these were to enable the <br />U. S. Bureau of Reclamation to complete the installation of an <br />additional oil circuit breaker and transfer bus connection to the <br />District's transformer bank at Boulder. The fifth was for the <br />purpose of connecting one of the Basic Magnesium, Inc. transmis- <br />sion lines to the Boulder switch rack. <br />Transmission and telephone line patrol I'oads were nwilltainecl <br />as U.'llal. There was no severe storm damage during the fiscal <br />year to any portion of the transmission system. <br />
