':::>

':",'

.....
W
l"J
~

El Dorado and Smackover areas discharge brines to some of the tributaries
of the Ouachita River. The greatest amount of brine is coming from fields
northeast of El Dorado, which are the old stripper fields that were developed
during the oil boom days of Arkansas, There is also a localized area near
Village, Arkansas, which has hiGh chloride content in the streams. however,
this condition should be corrected in the near future as underground dis-
posal of oil field brines is now being planned.

The Ouachita River is used as a source of domestic water supply, for
cooling waters for a steam generating plant and in many sections for fish-
ing. The quality of water in the stream can be improved in the localized
areas, which are now polluted, by the construction of proper facilities to
renove or reduce the stren!;l:h of the waste that is now being discharged.

Monroe, Louisiana developed Bayou DeSiard as an impounchnent supply
mainly because of the high chloride content of the Ouachita River caused
by oil field brines in Arkansas fields.

5 -18
