WHITE RIVER BASIN

o
C}
~
W
l'V
o

White River

The White River has only JII1nor localized pollution. Flotatious
matter is present in localized areas where domestic sewa~ is diBchar~d
wi thout treatment to the water course. Manganese content varies widely
in the White River in the vicinity of Batesville, Arkansas and is
attributed to the mining and processing of this ore in the area. The
mine waste has caused some difficulty and additional expense in treating
the river water for domestic supplies at Batesville, Arkans~B. There is
also waste from a fertilizer manufacturing plant which enters the river
through a tributary, which discharges to the White River near Newport,
Arkansas. The White River is used quite widely for recreational purposes.
Clam shells are extracted from the river for the purpose of making buttons
and there are sand and gravel concerns dredging the river bottom for their
material.

.

The White River however, may be considered, both from a standpoint
of quantity and quality, one of the more favorable streams for municipal
and industrial water in the Arkansas-White-Red basins.

'.

5-14
