The components are of COnCetn to the nlltion through the supplyfdemand analySis, and are
relat"d to the use and management of the resources in the a-rea. In addItIon, they are defIned
so that the type, quantity and quality of effect are evident, Finally, the components are those
~hith can be substantIally Influenced through the alternative plans. The study team used the
combined data for both the river corridor and the Pied-ra Valley for specifying components of the
NED and EQ alterniltivl!s.

National ~onomic Development Components. The description of the Piedra basin in Chapter It and
the study report shows the basin to be largely re~ource oriented. Major goods and services
produced arc ~ood products, outdoor recreation and agriculture products. The public hag identi-
fied the!e as local economic cOncernS as well as products of OIItional significance. ~ploration
and potential development of nuclear minerals and other energy reSOUrteS such as gas, coal and
oil were identifi~d a5 COnCerns for economic developmcnt but thcir potential is largely unknown.

I
f

National Economic Development can be served by increasing the production of any of these compo-
nents, provided the share of national demand allocated to the Piedra Unit exceeds the current
projected supply. More efficient production of these goods snd services will also contrIbute to
the ~ED objective.

The resource supply/demand analysis (Table VIII) indicates that by 1985 demand for a number of
resources and uses in the Piedra drainage--wood fiber, agriculture, numbers of big game animals,
and outdoor recreation activities of camping and trail use--will exceed the supply. 8y 2000 the
demand will exceed supply for all resource uses and activities except driving (or pleasure, power
boating on Villiama C-reek Reservoir and number of elk to achieve 8 reasonable hunter SUCtess.

Based on the tomparison of demand to supply, the folloYing components of NED identified:

1) production of wood fiber

2) output of outdoor recreation

3) production of sg-ricultural products

1,,) production of big game animals (huntln~ opportunity)

S) output of mineral production

6) output of hyd-ro-electric energy production

1-19
