MUNICIPAL.INDUSTRIAL WATER

Municipal supplies have been an important
aspect in the distribution of project water. Orig-
inally 9 communities had allotments totaling
44,950 acre-feet. Eleven communities now re~
ceive full or supplemental supplies. Each year
as urban population increases, irrigation allot~
ments are transferred to domestic purposes.
The depe.ndable availability of water con-
tinues to attract a variety of significant indus-
tries, adding to the economy of the area and
providing career opportunities_ especially for
youth.
As the Nation's principal conservation
agency, the Department of the Interior
has basic responsibilities for water,
fish, wildlife, inineral, land, park,
and recreational resources.
IRRIGATION

Project crops during recent years averaged
$136 gross value per acre and $97,934,383 in
total value. The accumulated gross crop value
exceeded $1% billion in 1969. Production is
varied and well balanced. Much of it is fed to
livestock, which provides an annual income of
more than $300 million.
During the 1954 drought, the project sup-
plied 300,352 acre-feet of supplemental water
which produced $22 million worth of the $41
million crops grown. Without project water-
the area would have suffered a far-reaching
catastrophy.
The valley's 6,000 irrigated farms support
about 250,000 people, and is a basis of an as-
sessed district property valuation which soared
from $120 million in 1937 to more than $623.8
million by 1970.

POWER

From the eastern portal of the Adams Tun-
nel, the water descends about 2800 feet to the
foothills. Nearly every foot of the "head" is
used for generation of hydroelectric power.
Gross generation averages 760 million kilowatt-
hours, of which 70 million KWH are used by
project pumps and 690 million KWH are mar-
keted to 9 rural electric cooperatives and 11
cities in Colorado, and serves about 325,000
people in rural areas and in small cities.
riiisswil llUe"s. in 'Wyoiltillg, Colorado, and west-
ern Nebraska is at the project headquarters,
Loveland. This Western Division of the Mis-
souri River Basin is an interconnected system
of 16 Bureau powerplants and 392,500 KW of
installed capacity. The Bureau system has 13
interconnections with other utilities with which
power exchanges may he made. In 1969 West-
ern Division power sales amounted to 2.17 bil-
lion KWH, with a combined maximum demand
of 483,000 KW, and revenues of $12.47 million.
Construction costs allocated to power facili~
ties, $61 million, will be repaid with interest.
Power will also repay $72 million of the irriga-
tioncosts.
