RECREATION

About two million people annually visit the
manmade lakes to enjoy fishing, motor and sail
boating, water skiing, camping, hiking, picnick-
ing, or to relax and view the scenic environ-
ment. Trout, kokanee, bass, walleye and perch
are the principal fish caught in the clear, cool
waters. Ice fishing has become a favorite win-
terspOrt.
While visitors flocked to project impound.-
ments nestled in the majestic, splendored
Rockies, recreation spending created a new
thriving economy.
Granby and Shadow Mountain Lakes, and
Horsetooth Reservoir generated a cash recrea-
tion sPEmding of nearly $5 million in 1968,
according to the University of Denver's Denver
Research Institute. This impact of recreation-
visitors included an estima.ted $1,792,000 for
boat sales. The purchases of boats, and sports-
men's gear and supplies, extended into areas
beyond the project and state.
Tbe study reported an increase in net land
values, investments in recreation facilities, and
other improvements at the Shadow :Mountain-
Granby and Horsetooth impact areas, totaled
$8.13 million.
The project's recreation values far exceed
the highest hopes of the pioneers who consid-
ered recreational opportunities an incidental
bonus.
