Although there is an urgent and immediate need of the Two Forks

Reservoir for flood control, the primary function of the reservoir will

be for municipal and industrial water supplies. This function is of

particular significance and urgency to the City of Aurora which is

scheduled to initiate importations of water in 1966 from its trans-

mountain diversion Homestake Project which is a joint venture with

the City of Colorado Springs. Aurora must have holdover storage

capacity on the South Platte River above its intake which is in the

vicinity of the Two Forks Dam site. If Two Forks storage cannot be

assured, Aurora might of necessity construct storage upstream which

would foreclose on more economical joint use in the Two Forks Reser-

voir. Likewise, the City of Denver will require storage to reregulate

importations from its Blue River system and to provide terminal holdover

storage capacity.

The Two Forks Reservoir will also provide exceptional oppor-
tunities for such recreational activities as boating, fishing, camping,
and possibly hunting. The National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife
Service, the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, the Forest Service, and
State and local recreation agencies and interests are actively cooperating

in planning such uses. In addition, the hydroelectric power potentiality

is of great significance and will be studied thoroughly as part of the

total plan for the Upper South Platte Unit.

Since release of the reconnaissance report, the Bureau of

Reclamation has conducted rather extensive geologic explorations at

5
