. i

.

.

FACT SHEET

DESIGNATION OF PORTIONS OF THE CACHE LA POUDRE RIVER,
COLORADO,. IN THE NATIONAL WILD & SCENIC RIVER SYSTEM

BACKGROUND

The Cache la poudre River, a unique, scenic river, is
located in north-central Colorado. It begins at the continental
divide at poudre Lake which is located in Rocky Mountain
National Park.

The river flows generally in an easterly direction through
Roosevelt National Forest, the cities of LaPorte, Fort Collins,
and Greeley, Colorado, before joining the South Platte River.

The U.S. Forest Service has studied 83 miles of the upper
reaches of the river for inclusion in the national wild and
scenic river system and recommended 62 miles for designation.

LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL

Does not affect the use and management of existing water
development in the poudre River Basin.

Designates 31 miles of the Cache la poudre as "wild"
and designates 44 miles as "recreational."

Names the upper 18 miles of the river the "Peter H. Dominick
wild River Area."

Preserves the current jurisdiction of water rights under
existing state law.

The Wild River areas are:

Beginning at Foudre Lake downstream to the confluence
of Joe Wright Creek, 18 miles.

South Fork Cache la poudre River from its source to the
Commanche Peak Wilderness Boundary, 4 miles.

South Fork of the Cache la poudre River from its
intersection with the easterly section line of
Sec.3D Township 8 North, Range 72 West, to the
confluence of the main stem of the Cache la Foudre
River.

0887
