.10
I ~; indicated that the procedures accurately measured the selenium concentrations in these samples.

r::'~
(,.;. For neutron activation analysis of selenium in muscle plugs, the accuracy and precision
tJ1
of the irradiation method was checked by MURR by irradiating 11 samples of National Institute

of Standards and Technology Bovine Liver SR.\11577a. Allll samples (mean = 1,14 pg/g Se)

were within the certified range (1.0-1.2 Ilg/g Se) and method precision for these II replicate

tissue analyses was 4.2% relative standard deviation. The limit of detection was 0.015 pg/g

selenium.

Statistical Analyses

Allstatistical analyses were performed using procedures in the Statistical Analysis

System (SAS Institute 1990) software package, Growth data for adult fish were analyzed using a

split plot in space and time analysis of variance (ANOV A), with treatment as the main plot, sex

as the subplot within treatment, and day of study as the time variable, along with all possible

interactions (Steel and Torrie 1980). Condition factor (K) was calculated by the formula of

Anderson and Gutreuter (1983) as follows:

K = weight (g) x 100,000
total length (mmi

Reproduction data for the females and subsequent biological data for the resulting progeny were

analyzed as a 3 x 2 factorial ANOV A with 3 levels of diet treatment and 2 levels of water

treatment. Selenium residue data for adult muscle plugs were analyzed using a split plot in time

ANOV A, with treatment and sample day as the main effects. When significant F values were

obtained, differences between pairs of means were determined with Fisher's least significant

difference (LSD) test.

Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to explore. for possible relations among

23 '
