003273

Bue Station

The HANDAR Base Station is the central receiving point for data
from all the remote sites. Data is transmitted directly to the base
station or indirectly through one or more repeaters.

The Base Station, shown in Figute 7, consists of a teceivet,
antenna, cable, and .IBM PC XT computer with monochtome or color dis-
play. The IBM computer uses a Multi-tasking Operating Software System
that allows data processing concurrently with data collection from the
remote sites. The Base Station computer also includes the HANDAR
Enhanced Alert Software program that collects, stores, processes, and
displays all collected data as well as providing the installation
configuration for the ALERT system.

The HANDAR 548 Receiver, shown in Figure 8, is a synthesized
receiver tuned to the remote or repeater .site frequency. The output
of the receiver is a decoded signal connected to the RS-232 serial
port of the computer. This receiver is composed of two sections: the
receiver which can be located near the antenna to reduce cablelosses~
and the decoder which is located near the computer. The synthesized
receiver can be tuned by means of pushbuttons to any frequency in the
VHF or UiF bands.

The 548 Receivet operates concurtently at both 300 and 1200 baud
rates. Consequently, it has the capability to operate with any of the
existing 300 baud Alert networks as well as a mix of both 300 and 1200
.baud data transmi tters. It, therefore, will meet the impending
standards for 1200 baud data transmitter rates.

The 548 also has an LED display that provides a continuously
updated reading of quality, noise, and loading--piuametets that are
quite useful, particularly in dense networks, for trouble-shooting and
isolating the causes of invalid data. Invalid data may be caused, for
example, by noise interference, or too high a sensor loading on the
system.

16
