The increased flexibility of
a network based on programable, multichannel, intelligent remote
units and a robust polled and event driven communication system
provides significant additional benefits, in addition to meeting
the basic requirements for an ALERT system. Based on our field
experience, the we can recommend the following combination of
vendor's offering for the network.

Remote Gauges
The heart of the remote units is a Campbell Scientific, Inc.,
Model CRIO Measurement and Control Module attached to the
Campbell synchronous Device Radio Modem with VHF Transceiver.
The CRIO at each remote site is user programable, either at the
remote site by used of a portable terminal, or from the central
site keyboard via the radio communication telemetry path.
Sensors may be sampled, processed, and archived independently of
polling or event reporting. Powerful full floating point
statistical and meteorological processing is provided, enabling
conversion of raw data to engineering units, with averages,
standard deviations, maximum/minimums with time tags, and vector
processing of wind speeds. The CRIO input capability is
versatile and has been optimized specifically for hydrological
and meterological sensors. For example, the CRIO is designed for
direct connection of water level sensors based on vibrating wire
pressure sensing technology, strain gauge technology or float
pulse type encoders; direct connection of tipping bucket or
weighing type rain gauges; direct connection of transducers for
fuel moisture content, thermistor or thermocouple temperature,
and wind speed and direction.

The CRIO based remote sites are completely contained in a 42"
high by 4" diameter aluminum tube, with an 1. 75" extension pipe
for mounting the tipping bucket rain gauge, antenna and solar
panel. These enclosures are bolted to a concrete footing with 4
5/8" bolts, and when installed result in a total remote site
height of 10'.

Event plus Polled Communication
The network communication is Campbell Scientific's
Radio/Telemetry communication protocol. This communication
protocol integrates both polled data collection and event driven
data collection on a single channel, simultaneously. Polled data
collection is where remote sites are interrogated for current and
stored data at user defined intervals from the central site.

SCC - Pikes Peak Early Flood warninq Proposal

9
