OuG021

Several potential historic sites have
proposed for wilderness designation.
Units 3 and 4 contain segments of the
the sites of the Hallett Creek Cabin,
Mine.

been recognized within the units
Unit 2 has the site of Dutchtown.
Ute Trail and Unit 4 also contains
Fern Lake Lodge, and the Eugenia

Historian F. Ross Holland, Jr. prepared the Historical Background Data
for Rocky Mountain National Park in March 1971. On the basis of his
study four sites within the wilderness proposal were identified as quali-
fying for the National Register of Historic Places. The Ute Trail which
passes from Beaver Meadows to Milner Pass has been nominated to the
register. Other historic sites in the process of nomination are the Fern
Lake Lodge and Hallett Creek Cabin in Unit 4 and the Old Dutchtown site
in Unit 2. Development/Study Package Proposals have been submitted for
Historic Structures Reports on the Hallett Creek Cabin and Fern Lake
Lodge. The former will continue to function as a ranger patrol cabin
while the latter will remain a public shelter. No adverse action will
be taken pending results of these more extensive studies in conformance
with Executive Order 11593.

Several archeological surveys have been conducted in the park. A
Masters Degree thesis entitled "Archeological Survey of Rocky Mountain
National Park - Eastern Foothills Districts" was prepared by Mary Eliza-
beth Yelm in 1933. In 1959 Wilfred Marston Husted prepared a Masters
Degree thesis entitled "A Proposed Archeological Chronology for Rocky
Mountain National Park Based on Projectile Points and pottery." An
additional survey was conducted by Husted in 1961 when he was employed
by the National Park Service. The field notes and maps are in the
library in the park. A Development/Study Package Proposal (form 10-238)
has been prepared to include preparation of an Archeological Base Map
and provisions for surveys of acquired lands within the park or those
added to it.

The Ute Trail is the only significant archeological feature or site
recognized in the park.

By Purchase Order, arrangements have been made with Colorado State
University for the conduct of archeological surveys prior to currently
scheduled construction projects. Similar arrangements will be made to
precede all future construction.

No mineral rights are present and no known commercially valuable mineral
deposits have been reported within the proposed wilderness area, but no
mineral su~vey has been made. The timber harvest potential for the pro-
posed area has not been determined; such consumptive uses, however, are
not allowed under present National Park Service Policy (Administrative
Policies for Natural Areas, 1970). Grazing of domestic livestock is

17
