OGJOl~

"

The Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, is presently studying
four roadless areas that border the park for inclusion in the National
Wilderness Preservation System. These are the Indian Peaks area (71,000
acres) south of the park, Never Summer Mountains (9,700 acres) west of
the park, Neota-Flattops (8,000 acres) northwest of the park, and the
Comanche-Big South area (47,000 acres) north of the park. These areas
are being studied for suitability, availability, and relative need for
inclusion in the system. The time schedule set by the Forest Service
for completion of the studies precludes their being considered concur-
rently with the present National Park Service proposal.

Three previously established areas on national forests in the region
are the Rawah Wilderness Area about 10 miles from the northwest corner
of the park in the Roosevelt National Forest, the Mount Zirkel Wilder-
ness Area in Routt National Forest, 35 miles west, and the Gore Range-
Eagle's Nest Primitive Area in the Arapaho-White River National Forests,
35 miles to the southwest.

11
