oo,sr3
,. J.

2. Erosion and Sedimentation

Streambank Erosion

Streambank erosion is a relatively serious problem throughout most of
the Missouri River Basin. Critical problems occur at many of the bridge
crossings where most of the trouble arises during flood flows. At times, ice
jams may also cause severe problems. In the upper part of the basin serious
erosion occurs along the Missouri River, Marias, Milk, Yellowstone River
below Livingston, Clarks Fork, Bighorn, Tongue, Powder, Knife, Heart, Bad and
White Rivers. In the lower part of the basin, erosion is particularly serious
in the western Iowa area of loess deposits, along the Nemaha and Little
Nemaha Rivers of eastern Nebraska, along the Kansas River and many of its tribu-
taries and along the Grand and Chari ton Rivers in northcentral Missouri.
Bank deterioration has occurred immediately below many of the large dams
constructed throughout the basin but is particularly serious below the Garrison
and Gavins Point Dams on the Missouri River. The extent of the problem is
shown in Tables SRF-G-2-1 and SRF-G-2-2.

11-179
