<br />(2) Cl imatic Features: Annual precipitation will <br />range from 25 to 35 1 nches (0.64 to 0.89 m) <br />with average annual temperature of 30 - 500 F. <br />(-1.1 io 1.70 C) and a frost-free period of <br />0-60 days. (July mean temperature of about 550 <br />F. 112 . 80 C]). <br /> <br />(3) Native Vegetation: This type is a woodland <br />plant community. The Engelmann spruce and <br />subalpine fir constitute a tree association. <br />Each species may be dominant in small areas, <br />but, in general, both species are present. In <br />the lower limits, quaking aspen, lodgepole <br />pine, and Douglas-fir may be associated; in <br />addition, limber pine and bristlecone pine can <br />be constituants of the stands. <br /> <br />(4) Associated Understory Plants: Fendlers blue- <br />grass, spike trisetum, nodding brome, elk <br />sedge, russet buffalo berry, dwarf blueberry, <br />alpine willows, alder, mountain birch, ceano- <br />thus, boxleaf myrtle, currant-rose, and common <br />juniper. <br /> <br />Grazing Use: There is little or no grazing <br />value under the dense cover, regardless of the <br />age of the stands. The grazing is limited to <br />openings and parks adjacent to the timber <br />stands. ASPEN <br /> <br />Physical Characteristics <br /> <br />(1) Physiographic Featu~: This species will <br />generally occur in elevations between <br />7,000 and 11,500 (2,134 and 3,505 m) (San <br />Luis Valley 8.000 to 11,500 [2,438 to <br />3,505 m] feet above sea level.
