At tne end of eacn 5 and lU-year period a fairly detailed formal

..-: ~

("~,

USDA report will be prepared.

Staffing and Funding

i~umber one priority is funding and staffing for monitoring of onfarm

irrigation to determine salt load reduction. The recotnnended plan requires a

significant initial layout for Equipment Level 4 relying heavily on recording

devices, automation and computer analysis to increase accuracy and reduce the

staffing requirements and costs over the study period. Table 1 displays the

funding requirements for alternative levels of sampling and the recommended

plan.

Coordination

This plan is developed to be fully coordinated witn other federal agencies

and tne states, oecause they are all involved in tne salinity program and

moni toring. USuA does not want to duplicate monitoring that others are. or

will be, doing. However, the amount of reduced deep pe,rcola tion and seepage

and associated salt load reduction as a result of our .~rk should be

determined by USDA.

The Bureau of Reclamation (BR) has begun a 3-year wildlife habitat and

population monitoring effort in Grand Valley. Some habitat mapping has been

done and access to this information is available for use in the SCS

monitoring effort. Wildlife population data from the BR Stage 1 study will be

used to help interpret findings from the SCS study.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife, FWS, and Utah Uivision of Wildlife

Resources have reviewed this SCS monitoring proposal and will be provided

progress and final reports for review.

rlasin-wide salinity is presently being monitored througll an extensive network

of sampling stations maintained by U.3. Geological Survey (uSGS). This

5
