.

.

I. Characterize present fish community, including endangered fish in
in the Gunnison River, confluence with the North Fork of the
Gunnison to confluence of the Colorado River with methodologies
that will allow comparison to past survey data (USFWS, 1979-81,
CDOW 1977-82).

2. Evaluate potential spawning of Colorado squawfish in the Gunnison
River above Redlands Diversion Dam utilizing radiotelemetry
studies.

IV. Study Area (river miles and sampling dates, if appropriate)

Gunnison River from confluence with the Colorado River to the confluence
with the North Fork of the Gunnison (river mile 0-75).

V. Study Methods/Approach

Conduct extensive sampling using electrofishing, entanglement netting,
trap netting, and seining, etc. to collect fish. This effort will be
combined with the USFWS effort to locate and evaluate previously stocked
fish in the Gunnison River. This will not only reduce costs but also
minimize sampling effort to accomplish both objectives.

Compare numbers, length-frequency distribution and location to survey
data collected in the Gunnison River 10 years ago.

PIT ta9 and collect tissue samples for genetic analysis from all juvenile
and adult endangered fish collected. In addition adult Colorado
squawfish will be radio-tagged to monitor movement and evaluate potential
spawning activity.

VI. Task Description (FY-1994)

Task I. Monitor radio-tagged adult Colorado squawfish throughout the
winter or until radio transmitter signals expire.

Task 2. Input field data into d-BASE; analyze summarize findings;
compare present study findings with past fishery survey and
inventory data; prepare draft and final report.

VII. Study Schedule (start/end by Task)
Task I. 4/92~10/92; 4/93~10/93
Task 2. 4/92~10/92; 4/93~10/93
Task 3. 4/92~7/94
Task 4. 10/93~7/94

2
