Navigation

Expansion of the commercial navigation facilities
(1965-2020) requires construction of 0.7 mile of
breakwaters and jetties, and removal of 0.2 mile of
breakwater; 35 miles of new levees; and dredging of
almost 500 million cubic yards of material to expand
and deepen navigation waterways. An additional 153
million cubic yards of dredging is also required to
construct land areas for cargo handling and to deepen
berthing areas.
The major additional commercial navigation
facilities required for the three time frames to meet
the projected needs are summarized in table 12.
The projected needs for commercial navigation
facilities are adequately met by the proposed plan.

Costs - Commercial Navigation

The estimated costs of providing and maintaining
the required facilities are based on historic cost
trends, costs for typical existing facilities, average
unit costs for dredging and breakwater construction,
and existing preliminary cost estimates adjusted to
1965 price levels.
The division between Federal and non-Federal
costs is based on existing laws and policies.
Operation, maintenance, and replacement (OM&R)
cost is the I.year cost at the end of the time frame
associated with facilities installed during that time
frame.
Figure 32 shows the estimated installation cost of
future facilities. An indication of the annual
operaiton, maintenance, and replacement cost of
facilities required for the navigation program in each
of the three time frames is summarized as follows:
